Here’s a mix Ben UFO did for Why Not?, a huge gig at Ministry of Sound this Boxing Day just past. The lineup was ridiculous: El-B, d:Bridge, Oneman, Untold, and not to mention HORSEPOWER.

I’m quite jealous, but did enjoy a day in the southern hemisphere sun to make up for it.

Fierce and Nico - Live in Christchurch 1997

Seeing as Spirit was recently kind enough to dig around in his tape box for us, we decided to do the same and see what we could find and Dave found a doozy!

In 1997 Fierce and Nico played a set at the now defunct Christchurch club, Base (although in a different location now), in New Zealand. It happened to be my first international d&b party and I don’t think I could have picked a better one. Packed full of classics of the time it really is an awesome mix, if you don’t mind the bad tape quality..

Fierce has been banging out the tunes since 1996, like the ridiculously hard Locust with Ed Rush, and lately has started up his own label Quarantine. You can also check out what he’s up to on his myspace page.

Nico is the owner of the legendary No U-Turn label. Since 2002 he had been relatively quiet on the producing front but since last year he has released records on Quarantine with Fierce and Break and on D-Bridge’s Exit imprint with Instra:Mental.

We had this gem of a mix by Nymfo on the site before it changed and due to a timely reminder we’ve decided to pop it up back up because it’s really good. Recorded in April 2005, it showcases Spirit’s tunes, from the older to the newish. It also came packaged with a lovely CD cover courtesy of Erosie, which Dave has nicely photographed for all to see.

Nymfo, formerly of Red Zone in the Netherlands, is now producing tunes and has releases on Deep Kuts, Inneractive, and Ram, among others.

Spirit finds an old cassette, knows we’re into cool shit whenever it was made, records it, sends it to us, and now we’re sharing it with you.

Besides that, Spirit’s label Inneractive Music has been consistently releasing the good stuff, and recently opened a download store. Exclusive tracks include new bits on Inneractive and 203, and a number of his older tracks on newly formed Inneractive Vault.

Inneractive Vault has some great tracks previously released on Timeless, Function, Phantom Audio, React, and even some reeeeeally old promo only tunes from Fresh 86 that probably only about 100 people heard back in the day. What’s more there are some unreleased gems in there too. My pick is the unreleased track Breakdown, probably from about 99, showcasing that hollow bass stab sound that only Spirit can do.

Everyone knows Martyn and Micky Pressure are making waves on the fringes of Dubstep with their labels 3024 and Naked Lunch.

These guys were part of the 10–years-running Red Zone drum & bass crew in Effenaar, Netherlands, alongside Fragment (Micky’s partner in Naked Lunch), Nymfo (who’s still keeping the BPMs high), Erosie (artist and Martyn’s partner in 3024), and probably some other way talented people who the world is gonna find out about sometime.

Back in 2007 Martyn sent us some mixes showing his take on techno. His mix is from the archive. I don’t think Micky’s was ever on here, but it’s good… enjoy!
